Sustainability in Motion
Casca for Volvo
September 2021
In early Summer 2021, a representative from Volvo Cars asked me to be a part of their ‘Sustainable Innovators’ showcase in celebration of World Car Free Day. As we worked through the details for a photo shoot and interview at Casca HQ, there was a clear alignment between the two brands and our shared vision for the future.
On a video call with their team, I proposed the idea of creating a shoe together down the road. The idea picked up quickly, and their team jumped at the prospect of creating a shoe for World Car Free Day less than 3 months away. With overseas shipping, this gave us less than two months to source, design and package the collaborative shoe.
Creating something unique in such a short timeframe meant we needed to get creative. After two rounds of proposals and refinement, the final design featured Volvo-inspired panels and branding atop the inline Casca Avro Knit. Constructed with a recycled PET knit upper, recycled tire specks within the rubber outsole, 100% post-consumer recycled packaging and an array of CO2-free materials like Japanese suede microfibre, we were proud to release a product that lived up to the sustainable vision of both brands.
The special release gained international media attention and sold out within a few hours.
